'The Real War Poets': PTC Poets Featured in The Times
In Erica Wagner's article,'The Real War Poets', published in The Times, she introduced 'a remarkable collection [of poems] from the front line' by 'the poets for whom war is daily life'. Her feature aimed 'to search out the poets whose experience of conflict is direct, intimate, everyday; who were born in conflict zones, who live and work there'.
We were delighted that The Times included poems translated by the PTC by our poets Partaw Naderi, Parween Faiz Zadah Malaal, Kajal Ahmad, Khaled Abdallah, Tuvya Ruebner and Maxamed Xaashi Dhamac ‘Gaarriye'.
In addition, Erica interviewed PTC director, Sarah Maguire, and our distinguished patron, Saadi Yousef, for her article.
The Times' feature was written in response to Carol Ann Duffy's commissioning of new war poems by leading UK poets for The Guardian. The commission - which included poems by our translators, Jo Shapcott, Carole Satyamurti and Sean O'Brien - stimulated a great deal of discussion on the subject of war poetry and how poets in the UK can 'bear witness' to conflict outside their direct experience.
