Mexican Poets' Tour 2010
Our recent Mexican Poets' Tour brought Coral Bracho, David Huerta and Victor Teran to the UK for a series of dynamic and exciting readings and events. The tour was an extraordinary success. Everywhere the poets went, they received a rapturous response from audiences and we were very moved by the warmth and excitment their wonderful poetry inspired.
We recorded videos of the poets reading at The Cervantes Institute and Crispin Hughes and Travis Elborough took photographs for us throughout the tour. These can be found on our Mexican Media page.
Broadcaster Dany Mitzman recorded two radio interviews with the poets and PTC Director, Sarah Maguire.
Two of the poets, Coral Bracho (translated by Katherine Pierpoint and Tom Boll) and David Huerta (translated by Jamie McKendrick) are at the forefront of Spanish-language poetry in Mexico. The third, Víctor Terán (translated by David Shook), writes in Zapotec, one of Mexico's many indigenous languages, whose fascinating culture is little known in the UK. All six poets took part in the tour.
The Mexican Poets' Tour visited London, Oxford, Manchester, Leeds, Grasmere, Glasgow and Edinburgh. The tour began in London at the Cervantes Institute on 15th April and ended at The Scottish Poetry Library in Edinburgh on 1st May.
Tom Boll wrote an essay for us called 'Three Mexican Poets', which introduces our poets and places them in their literary and historical context. You can also read this article in Spanish 'Tres poetas mexicanos'.
Many people are familiar with the work of the great Mexican poet Octavio Paz and are aware that Mexico has a rich and important poetic heritage. 2010 is the bicentennial of the Mexican independence movement and the one-hundredth anniversary of the Mexican Revolution and our tour was planned to coincide with this year of Mexican National celebrations.
