Somali Poetry Podcast
This podcast features the poems of Maxamed Xaashi Dhamac 'Gaarriye' translated by W N Herbert and Martin Orwin, with help from Maxamed Xasan 'Alto'. The recording includes three different poems read first in Somali by Gaarriye himself and then in English translation by W N Herbert.
Gaarriye is one of the most famous Somali poets alive today. His electrifying, highly dramatic, readings attract enormous crowds - and if you listen to this podcast you'll begin to get a sense of his appeal. The rhythms and musicality of W N Herbert's final versions are outstanding and are beautifully read by Bill himself.
