PTC Launches New Series of Community Workshops
Translating poetry can seem like a very daunting prospect for people who don't have English as a first language and so we've decided to arrange a series of innovative workshops aimed at Arabic and Somali speakers in which they're introduced to the work of the Poetry Translation Centre and will learn how our translators go about producing literal translations of poems. We hope that this experience will give participants the confidence to join our main poetry translation workshops - and, in the process, that they'll translate some fascinating poems from their language.
The series began with five workshops: three for Arabic speakers, led by the poet and translator, Worod Musawi; and two for Somali speakers, led by the translator and journalist, Maxamed Xasan 'Alto'.
They were a huge success, attracting much lively discussion among participants. Two literal translations produced in the community workshops went on to be completed in our general workshops: 'Perfection' by Faysal Aw Cabdi Axmed and 'One Day' by Hazim Al-Temimi.
We'll be holding more community workshops in the autumn, so please do join us if you can. As with the first series, all the workshops will be free to attend, but members must speak the language of the poetry we are translating. Any member of the Arabic-speaking community or the Somali-speaking community will be very welcome to join us.
