We’re in the early stages of planning our next World Poets’ Tour, scheduled to take place in October/November this year. In order to consolidate their literary reputations and to strengthen links with their communities, our Sudanese and Somali poets are returning to the UK. Joining them will be poets from Cape Verde, Kurdistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan. Again, all of them are being co-translated by well-known British poets.
In October 2005, we organised a ground-breaking tour of six leading international poets from Afghanistan, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Somaliland and Sudan to venues throughout the UK. They read alongside their co-translators – six distinguished UK poets – thus attracting audiences of British poetry lovers, as well as enthusiastic responses from the poets’ communities. The tour was an astonishing and often very moving success.

Our World Poets’ Tours aim to achieve two things: By inviting leading international poets to take part in events in the UK, we hope to introduce British audiences to their rich literary traditions in which poetry plays a significant role. And we want to pay respect to their communities who live here by making their culture feel significant and appreciated.
