Part of: Somali Poets’ Tour 2011 Somali Week Festival 2011 Women’s Evening
Oxford House
London
This remarkable evening celebrated the contributions of women, particularly the role of female artists, in Somali peace and development. Saado Cabdi Amarre, a leading Somali poet visiting the UK for the first time, shared some of her emotionally charged poems in Somali. PTC Director, Sarah Maguire, who co-translated some of Saado's poems with Maxamed Xasan 'Alto', read their translations alongside Saado.
They were followed by a very lively discussion, chaired by Nadifa Mahamed, author of Black Mamba Boy, featuring Amina Mahamoud, founding member and former director of Somaliland woman's umbrella organisation 'Negaad'; Suad Armiye, Chair of Somaliland Society UK; and Idil Osman, co-author of Somalia to Europe: Stories from the Somali Diaspora and Europe.
The evening ended with two fabulous Somali women singers and all the audience joined them for a dance!
