Lew Poo Chan, better known by her pen name Dan Ying, is a celebrated poet whose graceful, deeply reflective work has earned significant literary acclaim in Singapore and beyond. Influenced by classical Chinese poetry and Buddhist and Taoist philosophies, Dan Ying’s writing gives expression to her interior world in language that is deceptively simple while rich in emotion and metaphor.
Christina Ng’s vivid and sensitive translations bring together poems selected from six collections spanning Dan Ying’s literary career. Moving between spirituality and nature, womanhood and the passage of time, these poems take us from summers in Singapore to late autumns in America, and into lyrical meditations on simple living and the art of tai chi.
