Poems

Taste

If the poem is not free of wrong composition and other impurities
Or rid of disharmony and distorting hidden defects
If it does not shed light on unexplored areas
Or is not sought to heal old sustained injuries
Its verses are no more than milkless udder bearing no fats
So, let me recite it with spirit for the night is just the right time

Although he may call you by beautiful and graceful names, like a gorgeous mare
And showers you with praise and elevates you to a majestic State
Whispers soothing words to your ears, sweet and pleasant to hear
Dazzles your eyes, and arouses your insatiable desire
And yet cannot satisfy your taste, he is but a blocked road

If he provides you with multi-storey building,
And makes your abode a whole estate made of glass
Or the latest vogue and any thing you may demand
And places at your threshold all your petty fancies in life
And yet can't satisfy your taste, he remains a blocked road

However he may be said to be wealthy, and owns huge properties
And has the reputation of being very patient and generous
Or spoken of as an honoured and real caring chief
And holds a graduate's masters degree and other higher ranks
Yet can't satisfy your taste, he remains a blocked road

No matter how he reveals his painted heart to you,
And the blood flowing through its vessels are seen
And prints in his bosom your name Deeqa in bold
And composes Cilmi-like poems and risks falling off the cliff
And sings enchanting tunes from old poetry in wisdom rich
If he fails to satisfy your taste, he only remains a blocked road

If he takes you on a tour all over the world
And invites you to enjoy moments with him aboard flying planes
And delights your eyes with water fountains and flowing streams
In places teeming with deers, antelopes and the beautiful peacocks
And draws the carpets for you on lush green spots with low lying grass
Or takes you to  scenic Daallo just after rain, and invites you to Dalawa's milk
Offering you a bowlful of it, always wanting your comfort
Forever wishing to be bountiful to you in both the spring and autumn seasons
Always posing to be your unfailing rainy cloud, and the Doocan honey
Yet fails to satisfy your taste, he is only a blocked road

Though he might be a holy Darwish, or a gallant fighter,
A fearless young man who can destroy his enemy
Skillful at handling guns and fire arms, and never missing the aim
Commended for his roles in the battlefieds
And crushes his enemies, and tears their bodies apart
Yet fails to satisfy your taste, he remains only a blocked road

If treated to bowels full of food, flavoured with spices,
Varieties of meat, some  grilled, some warm and some cooked with fat,
Tightly covered and fastened with strings to keep them in perfect steam
Or as a present given a ghee pot in its traditional decorated case
But not seasoned with some salt, you can't eat with relish
So is taste, it can not be won by compulsion
You can never go against your heart's bidding

I thoroughly enjoyed this meaningful poem of Caasha Lul. If there is no understanding between potential partners hearts as Caasha has put it, the sharing of material possessions will not compensate for the absence of mutual affection.
