The Poetry Translation Centre (UK) and the Doctorate in Latin American Literature and Cultural Criticism, Department of Humanities at the Universidad de San Andrés (Argentina) are delighted to announce a new Queer Digital Residency programme to support two queer-identifying translators. We are looking to appoint one translator based in Argentina (translating from English into Spanish) and one translator based in the UK (translating from Spanish into English). The programme will run from April to December 2022, and offers structured support and paid time for the resident translators to explore the work of a living poet of their choice as well as queer translation as a practice. There will be a fee of £2,000 per translator, in addition to appearance fees for events and workshops.
Following the selection process in March 2022, the residency will be launched in April alongside the Poetry Translation Centre’s tour of Diana Bellessi’s To Love a Woman translated by Leo Boix in the World Poet Series. During the residency the translators will receive tailored seminar support, lead translation workshops and produce a new body of translations with support and funds for multimedia experimentation.The residency will culminate in autumn 2022 with readings at literary festivals in the UK and Argentina.
The residency is open to translators at all stages of their career. Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate that the notion and exploration of queer translation is of vital importance to them, and that the programme will help them develop and expand their translation practice and career in literary translation. Please note that while we will attempt to pair translators with their preferred choice of poet we cannot guarantee this. We are also open to working with successful applicants to select a suitable poet if they do not already have one in mind.
The deadline for submission is 13 March 2022.
Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed via zoom in March 2022.
