What do you hear when you read a poem? Its rhythm, the sound of a word or the pause at the end of a line can all shape a translation.
Join translator Christina Ng for a workshop that approaches a poem as a musical instrument: each translator begins with the same poem but finds a different way to play it. Taking inspiration from Eliot Weinberger’s Nineteen Ways of Looking at Wang Wei, which considers 19 translations of one short poem, we’ll listen closely and experiment with ways to carry its sound and feeling into English.
During her visit to Norwich, Christina will also read from The Years in My Hair: Selected Poems, her translation of Singaporean poet Dan Ying’s work. Find out about the reading.
