portrait of Partaw Naderi

Partaw Naderi

Partaw Naderi was born in Badakhshan a northern province of Afghanistan in 1331 [1953]. He studied in his birthplace and graduated from the Faculty of Sciences at Kabul University in 1354 [1976]. He was imprisoned in the notorious Pul-e-Charki prison by the Soviet-backed regime for three years in the 1970s shortly after he’d begun to write poetry. He is now widely regarded as one of the leading modernist poets in Afghanistan, the lyrical intensity of his work coupled with his bold use of free verse distinguishing him as a highly original and important poet. After years in exile he recently returned to live in Kabul where he is president of Afghan PEN.

  • Partaw Naderi came and worked for the Pashtu service at the BBC for a short period during the worst of the fighting in Kabul. All of his friends and colleagues were astonished that he actually returned to Afghanistan under the Taliban. He saw many of his friends for the first time in years at our launch party.

  • The launch party for our World Poets’ Tour – which took place at the October Gallery in central London on 4th October 2005 - was a very special evening. This was the first time our international poets got to meet their UK poet-translators (and each other); they were joined by representatives of their communities and assorted poetry enthusiasts. And, as you’ll gather from these photos taken by Crispin Hughes, it was a truly wonderful event.
