Despite foul weather and a tube strike, this was a wonderful evening of poetry from Afghanistan by Reza Mohammadi and Shakila Azizzada with music by the Yusuf Mahmoud Afghani Music Ensemble at Leighton House, one of London’s most beautiful buildings.

The best-loved Somali poet, Maxamed Ibraahin Warsame ‘Hadraawi’, read from his new selected poems with PTC Director, Sarah Maguire, reading W N Herbert’s translations. This was the last chance to see Hadraawi before he returned to Somaliland.

We were all deeply concerned to hear that the great Somali poet, Gaarriye, is seriously ill. This evening brought together his friends and translators to read his poems and discuss the outstanding contribution he’s made to Somali culture.
An enthusiastic, capacity audience heard two leading Afghan poets, Shakila Azizzada and Reza Mohammadi, read alongside their poet-translators, Mimi Khalvati and Nick Laird, while Sarah Maguire read her translations of Partaw Naderi’s poems.
